As part of Honolulu Chapter’s
ongoing service to the community, we held an ikebana workshop
for teachers from across the US, who participated in
Tokai University’s
Japanese cultural studies program. About 25 participants watched
a demonstration by Sogetsu Sensei Karen Kirk. She explained the
basic principles of good flower arranging and then demonstrated
by creating a Nageire and a Moribana floral design. She stated
that Sogetsu is more avant garde and showed how arrangements
should have line, space, color, and mass. The materials that
were used for this workshop were red Dogwood branches, pin
cushion protea, tulip anthuriums, ferns, and bulrush grass.
The students seized their
projects with enthusiasm and creativity. Their finished
arrangements expressed their various personalities and visions.
They were very appreciative of having this glimpse into the
ancient art of ikebana.
